Polished Concrete Flooring Explained

Flooring is one of the most defining elements of interior design, setting the tone for the entire space. Choosing the right material is essential to achieving a cohesive and elevated look. In many contemporary homes, polished concrete is becoming an increasingly popular choice.

It offers a subtle sense of luxury, with a smooth, refined finish that complements modern interiors. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, polished concrete is also highly practical, combining durability with low maintenance. Whether you’re seeking polished concrete flooring for your own property renovation or would like to learn more about its applications, this guide is for you.

Christopher David Design specialises in polished concrete and other luxury floor finishes as well as complete interior design services. We work closely with our clients to elevate their interiors with finishes that will stand the test of time.

What is a Polished Concrete Floor?

Concrete flooring was once limited to industrial settings; however, with the increased popularity of contemporary design, polished concrete flooring has evolved into a diverse flooring choice today.

Offering both durability and textural interest, a polished concrete floor can elevate any modern space, with a surprisingly elegant final surface. Polished concrete is also available in a range of finishes, colours, and styles for bespoke designs.

Concrete Flooring Process

To achieve a polished concrete floor finish, either raw or coloured concrete is poured, sealed carefully, and then polished to create a non-porous floor. The use of diamond polishing tools ensures that the concrete floor is finished to a grit level between 800 and 3,000, depending on the desired sheen. For most polished concrete floors, a higher grit is used to achieve a glossy final look.

What are the Benefits of Polished Concrete Flooring?

A concrete surface brings about a naturally minimalist finish; however, beyond being aesthetically appealing, there are additional benefits to choosing a polished concrete floor.

Concrete has a high thermal mass

Concrete is renowned for its exceptional ability to absorb and release heat. When you have a polished concrete floor installed, you’ll notice that it retains heat exceptionally well. This warming sensation can be further intensified with underfloor heating systems, making it a great option for open-plan designs.

A concrete floor is easy to clean

Concrete floors provide exceptional practicality. A new polished concrete floor will retain its finish over time thanks to its high durability and hard surface. With this in mind, it’s recommended to use a pH-neutral cleaner to ensure the flooring’s lifespan.

Waterproof and stain-resistant

When properly sealed, your concrete finished floor will be waterproof, which is especially practical for families with children. For this reason, concrete is also used in high-traffic areas such as the kitchen.

Polished concrete is light-reflective
Your floor structure can significantly enhance the space in your home, creating the illusion of a larger area.

Polished Concrete Floors Cost

On average, the cost of a polished concrete floor in the UK is between £110-£160 per square metre. This price generally includes pouring of the concrete itself, sealing, and polishing finishes.

However, the type of finish you choose can, of course, impact pricing.

Design Applications of Polished Concrete Flooring

Polished concrete is one of the most versatile flooring options available, and its adaptability
makes it suitable for a wide range of interior spaces. At Christopher David Design, we’ve seen how clients use polished concrete to create functional, stylish, and enduring spaces that enhance the way they live.

Kitchens and Living Areas

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, and polished concrete performs exceptionally well in
this high-traffic, high-use space.

Its durability, stain resistance, and ease of cleaning make it a practical choice, while its reflective surface helps bounce light around the room, making even smaller kitchens feel brighter and more open.

In open-plan layouts, polished concrete can flow seamlessly from the kitchen to living and dining areas, creating a sense of cohesion and continuity.

New Builds and Renovations

Polished concrete is ideal for both new builds and renovation projects. In new constructions, it can be poured as a single, level surface to achieve a sleek, uninterrupted look.

In renovation projects, existing concrete floors can often be polished to reveal a fresh, contemporary surface, provided the concrete is in good condition and free from significant voids or structural issues.

Underfloor Heating Integration

One of the biggest benefits of polished concrete is how well it works with underfloor heating. Its high thermal mass allows it to retain and radiate warmth evenly throughout the space.

Whether in a kitchen, bathroom, or living area, combining polished concrete with underfloor heating creates a comfortable, energy-efficient environment that is ideal for modern living.

Commercial and Multi-Use Spaces

Beyond residential projects, polished concrete is increasingly used in commercial interiors, such as studios, showrooms, and office spaces.

Its durability, low maintenance, and ability to reflect light make it a practical and visually striking choice. The neutral, minimalist finish also provides a versatile backdrop, allowing furniture, artwork, or other interior elements to take centre stage.

Creating a Cohesive Interior

When used thoughtfully, polished concrete can unify multiple spaces within a home. By extending the flooring through hallways, kitchens, and living areas, you create a continuous, flowing environment that feels contemporary, open, and connected.

Adding subtle variations in colour, texture, or sheen can also help differentiate zones while maintaining overall harmony. maintaining overall harmony.

At Christopher David Design, we view polished concrete not just as a floor finish, but as a key element in interior storytelling. Its durability, elegance, and adaptability make it an investment that enhances both the look and the lifestyle of your home.

The Process for Installing Polished Concrete Flooring

If you’re interested in installing a polished concrete floor in your home, the process is explained below:

If you choose to install underfloor heating, the concrete will need to be installed on top of the pipes. Internal and external vibration is then used in residential properties to level out the concrete. First, the concrete is mixed. The concrete mixture is created using cement, gravel, sand, and water.

The concrete is then poured carefully – The concrete is poured onto a steel mesh to support the
weight of the material and reduce the chances of cracking.

Achieving the desired concrete finish – A coloured hardener can be added to the concrete to
create your finished look. The hardener is then smoothed over using power floats.

It’s important to note that at least 28 days must pass before concrete can be polished, unless it was preexisting. After 6-12 months, the concrete flooring will reach its full durability.
